24 July 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 24th July [1885]. Sat to Mr Vigor before breakfast. Worked with Miss Holas all morning. She kindly made us Turkish Dolmas for lunch which were much approved. Mlle Hortense came after lunch looking very ill & with a very bad cough. At 4, Sir John, Mr Colnaghi & I started off to pick up Henry who had gone to see Genl de Horsey & then we went to the Edens’ door & got into their steam launch. Lady Bagot, the Edens & we 4 started off in the launch for Torcello & had a very pleasant evening & enjoyed the cooler fresher air. At Torcello we landed & went over the churches & into the Museums. Mr Eden & I sat & watched 2 handsome young women in picturesque colors– One was singing & taking her washed clothes down from the lines & was quite a picture. About 7 o’cl. we started again in the launch for S. Francesco in Deserto an Island where there is a convent of about 20 monks—a very picturesque spot. On the way the wind carried off Henrys hat & we had some fun & excitement having to put back to pick it up & in so doing got aground for a minute or so. We landed on a bit of ground outside the convent walls & dined by moonlight—it being then past 8. We were all hungry & enjoyed our meal. A distant storm was going on in the direction of the mountains & fine flashes of lightening added to the beauty of the scene. The Island of Burano stone white in the moonlight & it was charmingly cool. At abt 9.30 we set off home & got to the Edens’ door at 10.30 & got into our gondola. Went under the giardinetto & got some iced lemonade & then home to bed. The lightening continued but there was no storm.
