20 August 1885 — Rosenlaui
Thursday. 20th August [1885]. At 8 o’clock Henry & Annie the maid & I mounted our steeds & left Rosenlaui. Miss Maxwell went with us & Mr Maxwell also walking. Mr & Mrs Ball followed later. He walking—she in a chair & we went over the Great Scheidegg pass. We rode to the top & there dismounted. It was a lovely day. We walked down a good part of the other side of the pass but entered Grindelwald on horseback & went to the Hotel Adler. Mr Henfrey was there to receive us & we had rooms in the Dependance Chalet Schloessli as did also our friends. At another dependance were the D. & Dss of Sermoneta who received us with great amiability. We lunched as soon as we arrived & then rested. At 6.30 we dined at the table d’hote with Mr & Mrs Henfrey, Genl & Mrs Maxwell & their nephew & niece.
