22 August 1885 — Grindelwald | |
Saturday. 22nd August [1885]. Lunched 12 with Sermonetas. Afterwards took a walk to the glacier with them & Mr Ball. We went first to the gorge or Schlucht to see where the stream goes out thro’ the rock & then by the help of the Duke’s arm I managed to toil up to where the ice begins– The man who lives in the little chalet up there insisted upon making me go into a cavern cut in the ice & made me leave the Duke’s arm & take his. The artificial cavern cut in the ice was damp & cold & we did not linger in it. The walk back to the hotel was easy & down hill. Dined with the Sermonetas at 8 & went to their sitting room in the evening. | |
