24 August 1885 — Grindelwald
Monday. 24th [August 1885]. We had intended leaving for Interlaken in the afternoon but at 9 the Duke came to say they were going to drive into Interlaken at 10.30 to meet Signor Bonghi so we decided to go with them & started in their carriage, Annie going on before with our luggage. The Dss took her St Bernard puppy with her to the vet as the little animal was not well & 2nd son also accompanied us. We got to Interlaken at abt 12 & went to the Hotel Jungfraublick. It was a lovely day & we had a fine view of the Jungfrau. We lunched at once, the Dss went to the vets with her dog & returned to lunch. Directly afterwards the Duke went off to the station to meet Bonghi & the Dss, Henry & I walked into the town to buy Swiss embroidery. Henry left us to do his own errands. The Dss & I went into a great many shops to compare the prices; we met the D & Bonghi who accompanied us & we went down the Promenade to the Kurhaus & by the time I had bought an embroidered gown for 83 fcs & the Duchess had got some stuff for herself it was 5 o’cl before we were back at the hotel. We had tea in the garden & then the Duke & Dss, Bonghi, dog & boy drove off back to Grindelwald. We had rooms in the Dependance a little villa at the foot of the hill on wh the hotel is built & we had to toil up to dinner at 8. Sat in the garden & had coffee & there was Tyrolese singing & zither played by some peasants. Saw Mr Underdown in the garden & the Duttons.
