25 August 1885 — Interlaken
Tuesday. 25th August [1885]. We had breakfast at 7.30 in the verandah of our villa & at 8 Henry & I drove off to Lauterbrunnen which took abt 1½ hour in an einspanner. It was a lovely morning. We found quantities of English there as it is a centre for several excursions. We walked abt for an hour while our horse rested to see the Staubbach Falls. There was not much water in it & therefore it was not so fine as usual. At every 10 paces we found a girl or woman making pillow laces & selling cut wood things. We bought something but the lace is coarse & common. Drove back to Interlaken by abt 11 o’cl. Lunched at 12.30 up at the hotel. Took a walk in the town to do a little shopping & see the Promenade. Dined at 8– A splendid moonlit night & the Jungfrau looked splendid—we sat out on the terrace some time & then returned to our lodgings & played cribbage.
