16 September 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 16th September [1885]. I had a headache all the day & in the morning was not able to do anything & had to lie down but at 2 I had to rouse myself to go to Torcello & Burano with the Princesses. We went to the Hotel & from there the whole party walked to the Piazza thro’ the Royal Palace & the garden to the landing place where we embarked on board the Queen of Italy’s little despatch boat & we went off to Burano. At Mazzorbo we stuck in the narrow canal but having the small steam launch which had tugged two gondolas we got on all right to Burano where we all landed & went to the Lace School. I had such a headache all the afternoon that I sat in the deck house & Mlle de Perpigna kindly remained with me & we had a great deal of talk about the Princesses. She told me that Pss Victoria was engaged to the Prince of Bulgaria in secret. That every body was against [it] except her own mother & that her father was strongly against it as also Bismark & the Emperor. Also that the Pss had twice refused the hand of the Prince of Portugal which would have been a very good marriage for her—& that she Mlle de Perpigna thought that the P. of Bulgaria was anxious himself to be off his engagement & that Pss Victoria was not seriously attached to him. She Mlle de P. had had to write the letters to the P. of Portugal refusing his hand & put it on the plea of difference of religion. From Burano we went on to Torcello & landed & I at once set out the tea I had brought under the portico of the church. The Canonico came & joined us after showing the Pss round the Church. We found the despatch boat with Capt Acton had come on to fetch us & we started home abt 5 & had a lovely journey. I sat on the bridge with my head on Addie’s shoulder & enjoyed the cool evening air & Mlle de Per: sat with us. There was a marvellous sunset reflected in the Lagoon & we got home to 8 o’cl dinner.
