24 September 1885 — Cison
Thursday. 24th September [1885]. When we went down in the morng found Ct & Css Paolo Brandolin had come over to breakfast. Css Sormani Moretti also came over. After lunch abt 3 o’cl we had a drive to Serravalle. I drove with Ninina in one carriage, Css Sormani took Margharita & Ct Brandolin drove another carriage with Henry & M. d’Adda. We went to Sta Giustina to see the monument of the last of the Da Caminesi to whom the Castle of Valmarino had originally belonged. It is a fine monument supported by 4 grotesque warrior figures & had the recumbent figure of the occupant of the tomb. We then went to a cafe & had refreshments– I then changed with Henry & went in Mr d’Adda’s carriage. We went through the town & some side streets to the Church of to see some frescos wh are signed Antonelli & by many are believed to be by Antonelli da Messina but they are so grotesque that it must be impossible. There was a christening of a baby of 2 days old going on while we were there & I was much struck by the irreverence of the service & the way the priest mumbled through it. The child was swaddled & lay on a pillow & the whole was covered with a large linen cloth where the girl carried it home. We got home just in time for 7 o’cl dinner—& it was nearly dark. Écarté in the eveng. The post arrives here abt 10.30. News in the papers that there is a revolution in Rumelia & the Bulgarians have annexed the province wh will lead to serious state of things. Ct & Css Persico arrived at the castle.
