28 September 1885 — Cison
Monday. 28th [September 1885]. As soon as I was dressed I went down to sit with Ninina (at 9). We breakfasted at 11.30 & then Henry & I started off in the Brandolin’s carriage to drive to Vittorio. We passed the cottage which had been struck by lightening last night. It appears the good people were in bed. The bolt came down the chimney, tore up the floor, scattering the bricks over the bed—passed all round the room & out of the window knocking a hole in the wall. No one was hurt happily. Just as we got to Vittorio station a thunderstorm began & we had torrents of rain. While waiting for the train we saw Mr Malcolm who had just come from Venice & was going up to La Punta to see what damages had taken place from the sudden & great rains. We left at 2.30 & reached Venice at 5.50. It was no longer raining and there was a splendid sunset. Dined at 7.30 & did not go out. It was blowing hard all night.
