29 September 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 29th [September 1885]. Michelmas day– Got up at 7. Read. Practised guitar, wrote. Breakfast 9.30. Gave out stores. Wrote to Ninina—made cigarettes for Henry. Lunch at 1.30. Directly after we went to the Hotel d’Europe to see the Crown Princess & found her at home. Henry went to see the General de Horsey & I went to leave some cards & fetched him & went to Stabto where we heard that Mme Castellani is much worse & not expected to live. Went to the Piazza for a short time. I met there Lady Dudley & her sister Lady Mackenzie & spoke to Lady D. but she did not seem pleased to see me & when I asked her to come & see me said she was not by way of going out. I knew that her husband had died not so very long ago & told her she would meet no one. Went home to tea at 5 & to my surprise the Crown Princess appeared with Mlle Gersdorff to tea. She stayed some time looking at the pictures & talking of the insurrection in Roumelia which she did not disapprove. She told us how much the P. of Bulgaria hated the Russians & that the ADC that they had sent him had insulted him in every way & if by chance a Russian officer in his service behaved well to him, he was sure to be recalled. On her way down stairs as she was going away she confided to Henry as a great secret (!) that the Prince of Bulgaria was anxious to marry her daughter Pss Victoria. Henry & I dined at 7.30 & directly after went to the Piazza to meet the Princesses & walked up & down with them. Capt. Acton & the German Consul were there. Princess Victoria insisted on calling me “Aunt Enid” in imitation of Rachel Gurney which caused some amusement.
