3 October 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 3rd October [1885]. Better & up as usual—but not able to do much. Wrote letters &c. Henry went out in the afternoon, I remained at home. Old Mrs Brown came to see me—having just returned to Venice. Then Mrs Bronson bringing with her Browning the poet & his sister, who are staying with her—then Lord Dunmore turned up with his little daughter– They have taken part of Pss Dolgorouky’s house on the Zattere for the winter for Lady D. who is very delicate & he has come to get it in order– Then while I was at tea in the studio came Mlle de Perpigna & sat some time till she was joined by Herr Lutteroth & they went home together. Dined at 7.30 & we went to walk on the Piazza to meet the Royalties & accompanied them back to the Hotel on foot. The Crown Prince was there having arrived at 4 this morning. The Comte de Flandres was also there, a tall, serious, very deaf elderly man– As we got near the hotel the C. Princess stooped to pick up a little black kitten in the street which she said knew her very well & always looked for her & got on her shoulder. The Prince’s Greyhound barking with delight at the sight of his master rather disconcerted the kitten who got on my shoulder & put out its claws. When we were walking on the Piazzetta the Pss Victoria drew my attention to a lady walking near who was following them & whom we saw edge up to the Crown Pss with a letter in her hand—we had to dodge her in any way to keep her off. I have no doubt she had a petition to present—at last she gave it up & went away.
