4 October 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 4th October [1885]. I went to church in the morning & on the way home went to see Mlle de Louvard the poor french lady who is ill & found she had sent to me to beg me to lend her some money. I gave her some & hastened home to lunch & at 2 we went off to go on board the canoniera to accompany the Crown P. & Pss for an excursion. The Comte de Flandres & 2 ADC went also & the Princess Radziwill. We sat on the bridge & enjoyed the lovely weather. We had ices—sketched—talked & joked. We went out beyond the Lido to the open sea where there was happily a perfect calm & then round by Burano where the P. & Princess all got out & went to land. There was a great fête going on—the unveiling of a statue to a native musician. When they returned on board we had tea—& then turned homewards & stopped when we got near the Fondamenta Nuove to land the C. Prince & Pss who went to see a procession at S. Giov. e Paolo. The rest of us went on to the Piazza, there found our gondolas. It was 6.30 & we went home, dined & then went out to the Piazza– Met Miss & Genl Maxwell & walked with them until the Princesses came. The band was playing & there was such a crowd that it was not very pleasant walking.
