5 October 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 5th October [1885]. Wrote letters. Had visit from Dr Cini, fm Mrs Hamilton & the Misses Holas, the latter about Css Brandolin’s work. Miss Maxwell came to see me & stayed to lunch; we took her back to her hotel afterwards & went on to Danielli’s to call on Cte de Flandres. Went to walk on the Piazza– Left Henry at Genl de Horseys & went to see Mme Louvard & then came home to tea. Dined at 7.30 & then went out to meet the Prince & Pss. After walking a little while, the band playing the while, there appeared the little Princesses [who] were dressed in light blue. The crowd found them out & began to follow & mob them– They divided their party some going one, some another way. At one moment Pss Victoria got surrounded & Henry with difficulty got her out. Later I joined the Crown Princess & our progress became almost impossible, a lot of small boys began to run round & round us. I appealed to a passing officer to help us & he spoke to a guardia. Capt. Acton & Henry came up & helped to keep back the crowd & we went to the Piazzetta where Henry offered to put the young Princesses into our gondola. However the young ones went home & the Crown P. & Pss & Pss Victoria sat down at a table of the Giardinetto Cafe while Seckendorff went round & got the private door through the Royal garden opened & through it they made their exit to the Piazza & so home. We got into our gondola & came home. Baron & Bss Kendell were with the Prince having come from Rome on purpose to see them.
