6 October 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 6th October [1885]. Received a quantity of flowers from Mrs Eden’s garden & arranged them for our dinner table of this evening as we had the Crown P. & Pss dining with us. Css Marcello was to have been one of our guests & just after luncheon I got a note from her saying that as her son Andrea was at home for a short holiday she would not leave him for dinner & declined to come. This was very uncivil to us & the C. Pss and very stupid. We rushed off at once to the Hotel d’Europe to see what could be done. Just as we left the house in gondola we met Princess Radziwill who came to accept our invite to come here in the evening & then Mlle de Perpigna who came to tell us that B. & Bss Kendell whom I had also invited for the evening had misunderstood me & were coming to dine– She suggested that Mlle de Gersdorff shd be asked to give up her place wh she kindly consented to do when I saw her & explained. We went out with Mlle de Perpigna to the H. d’Europe & settled it so that our party consisted of the Crown Prince & Princess, Princess Victoria, B. & Bss Kendell (the German Ambr at Rome), Lord Dunmore, Mr Browning, Mr Malcolm, Count Seckendorff & Captn Acton. The Royalties arrived at 8 o’cl punctually. The dinner was good & did credit to our cook. The table looked very pretty & all went well. In the evening Mrs Bronson & Miss Browning, Mr Horatio Brown, Genl Maxwell & Mr & Miss Maxwell, Mr Storey the American Sculptor & Mrs Storey came & Pss Radziwill & the Royal party remained till abt 10.30.
