7 October 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 7th [October 1885]. I went out to see Mlle de Perpigna directly after lunch to ask her to dine tonight & she received me in her bedroom. I was just going off in the gondola with Henry when Pss Victoria called to me from the balcony that the Crown Pss wanted me & so I returned & she took me into her bedroom & showed me 2 terra cotta little reliefs which she had bought. She was dressing the while to go out. Henry & I went on to the Piazza to leave cards &c I went to see Mme Louvard before I returned home. Sent the gondola to meet the 5.15 train from Bassano by which Mr & Mrs Ball arrived to stay with us. Mlle de Perpigna & Mr Vigor dined with us & in the evening Count Loredan arrived with a letter of introduction from his cousin Css Brandolin. He is a descendant of the Doge & being very poor he has taken to the piano as a profession & is very anxious to play before the Crown Pss. He tried our piano & played Chopin & Liszt very well. He played a sonata of Beethoven far less well & does not evidently succeed with classical music.
