9 October 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 9th October [1885]. I spent all the morning working the sewing machine. Miss Maxwell came to see me & helped me & she remained to luncheon. She returned to the hotel in the vaporetta. Henry, the Balls & I went out in gondola. We went to Guggenheim’s where Mrs Ball bought a spy glass; we then went to Biraghi to show them the staircase he is carving for Canford– To Marcatos to borrow a piece of stuff & have copied by Trapolin. It rained in the evening & there was no going out so we 4 set to work to play whist & I got some instruction in the game wh I have only played ½ doz. times.
