18 October 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 18th October [1885]. Augusta Gregory & I went to the church service in the morning. We sent a telegram to the Crown Prince as it is his birthday. After luncheon we went out in gondola—left cards & at 4 went to Mrs Bronson’s to hear Browning read some of his poetry. There were several people there, the Max Müllers, Storys, Miss Leigh Smith, Mrs Curtis &c &c. He read to us the statue & the bust—Andrea del Sarto—one poem about the ride to Aix & another abt the saving of the French fleet in the N. Seas. I dont remember their titles. We did not think he read very well or clearly—but I think I understood what he read which I had never been able to do when I tried to read them myself—but I came to the conclusion that it was none of it poetry. Mr & Mrs Max Müller dined with us and we had a very pleasant evening. He signed his name in my book in English & in Sanscrit.
