4 November 1885 — Florence
Wednesday. 4th November [1885]. I went after breakfast down to Lady [Hammond] to ask her if she would allow her 3 daughters to go tomorrow with Henry to see Fra Diavolo in wh case he would like a box for them. They accepted & it was settled. It was a very brilliant morning, Augusta, Henry & I walked to the tramway on the other side of the Arno & the sun was broiling & when we got into the shade it was cold so that Henry encreased his cold. We went to Castagnolo to visit Mrs Ross. Mr Ross met us at the crossroad up to the Villa with a little donkey cart for Augusta & me of wh we were glad as it was very muddy. Mrs Ross received us very kindly & gave us lunch & showed us the orchids & the birds. Sir Hy & Lady Scanlon & Mr Goetz came to call just as we left which we did abt 4 & returned to Florence by tram getting in just as it got dark. The Gregorys & we dined at Mr Colnaghi’s & met Profr & Mme Villari, Mr Spence & Sir James Lacaita. The latter took me in to dinner. We had a pleasant dinner but Henry’s cold was bad & he did not enjoy it much & was glad to get to bed.
