6 November 1885 — Florence
Friday. 6th November [1885]. I went alone to the Pitti to go on with my copy & came back to lunch intending to go up to Villa del Pino to see Miss Macleod. When I returned I found Miss Mc. had sent to say we were not to come on acct of the wet—so Henry did not go out at all. Lady Hammond brought Mme [illegible word] to call on us at 4.30– The latter is an Englishwoman & was the widow of a Mr Miller a secy in the Ottoman Bank. She is now married to a Russian savant & they live in great style at Florence. She seemed to me somewhat pretentious & I did not take much to her. Mme Villari & her daughter Mlle Mazini called & also Mr Gibbs & his son a clergyman. Henry did not come down to dinner so I dined with the Gregorys.
