7 November 1885 — Florence
Saturday. 7th [November 1885]. I went to the Pitti & finished my sketch, having happily a fine day for it. Henry went out with the Gregorys. After lunch I took a cab & went to pay visits. Found Mr & Mrs Bracken at home. They have a fine house 6 Via delle Porte Nuove. I met there Miss Violet Paget the writer under the nom de plume of Vernon Lee. Saw Mr Bracken’s studio & a picture he had this year in our Royal Academy. I went to leave cards on Mme [illegible word] & then to see Mrs Newman whom I found at home (1 Piazza Rossi). Her husband soon after came in & showed me a picture he had begun at Venice of Venetian boat sails in the foreground & a distant view of the town in the early morning haze. The picture was only sketched & it was difficult to judge of it– But the sails seem very big & the town very small. It is a long narrow picture. Came in to tea. Henry was better & we all 4 dined downstairs.
