20 November 1885 — Rome
Friday. 20th November [1885]. Henry went to the Lateran Museum & so I accompanied him in the carriage to the door & then went on to pay Annelia Warrington Wood a visit in her little cottage close by where I remained till Henry fetched me. I went with Mr Wood through his studio & then got him to play his organ to me. We went back to the Embassy abt 12. Sir John gave a large & formal luncheon party to Lord & Lady Hammond, their 3 daughters, Mr & Mrs Kennedy & Mr & Mrs Beauclerk up in the reception rooms. It lasted till nearly 3 & at the end came the D & Dss of Sermoneta to call on us both very pleasant & cordial. At 3 o’cl Mme de Westenberg called for me & took me for a drive to the Villa Doria. The day was cloudy tho’ not actually raining– We met hardly anyone at the Villa & when Mme de W. gave her servants orders to drive to the Pincio it was nearly dark & quite dark before she dropped me at the Embassy door. We dined at 7 & in the eveng Sir John went out to a party given by the prefect of Rome on the occasion of a penitenciary congress. Henry & I looked at photos of drawings & went early to bed.
