24 November 1885 — Milan
Tuesday. 24th [November 1885]. Went with Henry abt 10 to enquire if the d’Adda’s were in town which they were—& on to Brera to Bertini’s studio. We saw him & Sr Cavenaghi & saw some pictures in repair belonging to Dr Richter amongst others a fine Gentil Bellini portrait. Went into the gallery to see the picture by Mantegna wh had always been thought by Giov. Bellini & which has lately been restored by Cavenaghi that is all the repainting that covered & transformed it & wh had been done at a very early date was removed & it is now splendid & the gem of the collection. We returned to lunch at 1 & then Mme d’Adda came to call & carried me off shopping with her & we went to Ermelinda’s the work shop & arranged about some new work for me to do. Thence we returned to Mme d’Adda’s house & I remained there till Henry fetched me. He had been to see a picture with D. Carlo d’Adda. We walked back to the hotel abt 4 & at 7 went back to dine with them & in the evening Henry & Da Mariquita played écarté. D. Carlo went out on business. Two gentlemen came in. We left early. Annie our cook joined us from Venice.
