15 December 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 15th [December 1885]. After our breakfast I went & sat with Temmy in her bedroom while she breakfasted—& then saw her walk off to Langham House with her maid. She was to be left with Mama & remain there to see the bride & bridegroom after the ceremony. Then I dressed & sending our carriage to take the bride to church I was fetched by the twins & went with them to St George’s Hanover Sqr & Henry joined me on foot. The bride arrived at the church punctually at 11.30 & had a moment to wait at the door as the clergy were not in their places. They were Mr Scott Holland Canon of St Pauls & Mr Goodwin son of the Bp of Carlisle. The bridesmaids were 6 in number viz Ola & Nela Du Cane, Miss Doris Du C, Francie Guest, Annie Murray & . Alice looked very handsome. There were 2 hymns sung & a psalm chanted & Mr Holland gave a tiresome wordy address wd one could not follow & wh made it very long. After the wedding Hallam took Alice to see his mother who does not leave her room as she has softening of the brain. They went on to Langham House to see Mama & Temmie & a large party had assembled at 25 Pk Cresct before the bride & bridegroom got there. The breakfast was hurried & there were no speeches. Maria asked Henry to propose the health of the bride & bridegroom wh he did in a few words. He said he had only once before been at St George’s Hanover Sqr & that if being there today had brought Hallam such good luck as it had brought to him on his own wedding day he thought Hallam would be a happy man– Hallam answered briefly. The cake was cut & the pair went up stairs to change their dress for travelling dress. They left only just in time to catch the 2.15 train, in a shower of rice & white shoe. They went down to the Hambro’s place Milton Abbey near Blandford for the honeymoon. I went off soon after with Mrs Hambro to her house & lunched with her—& then went home & rested. Henry came in later to tea. After tea I went off to buy Alice & send her a pair of garters wh item had been forgotten in her trousseau. Maria, Kate, Blanche & Connie my 4 sisters dined with us—also Mama & Richard Du Cane—& Dacre. It is a long time since we 5 sisters had been altogether. Temmie drove home to Putney after the wedding.
