18 December 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 18th [December 1885]. It was a black fog this morning & we had to dress & sit all the morning by lamplight. It cleared towards 12 & I went out walking. I went to see Blanche & then on to do some shopping. I went to look at second hand broughams as we intend buying one. I came home to lunch. Drove with Blanche in our carriage in the afternoon & went in search of Christmas presents. In Oxford St we dismissed the carriage intending to walk home but it came on to rain so we got into a hansom & I dropped Blanche at her home & went on to tea with Maria at Pk Crescent. Arthur Du Cane walked me home. I had hastily to dress & dined at 7 & Henry & I went to see the Mikado at the Savoy Theatre. We found our stalls were next to Lady Ely much to our delight. She told us the Queen was very unhappy at the state of affairs & especially of Gladstones having declared for home rule in Ireland. My sister Constance & 4 of her boys were also in the stalls.
