26 December 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 26th [December 1885]. Spent the whole morning writing letters. Lunched at 1 because I was going early down to Putney to see Mrs Austin. While we were at lunch to our surprise walked in Alice & Hallam Murray. They had come up to town last night & are going on Monday to the Riviera. I asked Alice to go to Putney with me & we drove there together, stayed an hour & found Temmy rather better. I left Alice at her hotel in Dover St soon after 4 & came home. Tea at 5, abt 6 my brother Arthur came to see me. He had a very bad cold. We are all very much upset at the terrible accident wh has just happened to the 2 Fitzroy girls. When dressed for a ball one of them caught fire—her sister also in ball dress rushed to help her & caught fire herself & died in 24 hours. The other girl is not expected to live. Maria & Richard, Constance & Charlie, Mama, Blanche & Edward dined with us.
