19 January 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 19th [January 1886]. Mrs Burr called in the morning & had a chat & found me copying Sir Charles Eastlakes water colour sketches. Later Mr & Mrs Eden came to luncheon. Henry dined at “The Club” having just been made a member of it—a great honor paid to literary men. I went to dine with Lord & Lady Esher (late Sir Baliol Brett). I sat next our host & Col. Colville took me to dinner. Henry’s dinner was at Willis’ Rooms– Gladstone was there. Lecky & Gladstone talked much of his controversy on Genesis with Huxley. Mrs Bishopsheim dined at the Eshers & suddenly in the middle of dinner there was a stir & she rose from her chair. The Revd Mr White who sat next her began to wipe off her new white dress a pink stream of currant jelly wh was trickling oozily down her back! The unfortunate footman who had dropped the jelly over her must have trembled in his shoes.
