2 March 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 2nd March [1886]. Altho’ there was no snow it was very cold. Eda & I took a walk up Oxford St to Collinson & Lock to see a sofa that was being made for me & then got into a cab to go to the “Dinners” we found we were ½ hour too early & had time to go home & back again before 1 o’cl & got back to lunch. I was very tired & did not go out again after lunch. Blanche came in—& Ld St Germans & Bee Eliot & later Mrs Alexander Bagot & Miss Reddington & they stayed until I had to turn them out & dress for dinner. Miss R. played to us—& I made Eda, Mildred & Evely Eliot who came in played the piano & violin. Henry & I dined with Mr & Mrs Birch 27 Cavendish Sqr at a farewell dinner to Rances the Spanish Minister. Lord Esher took me in & Mr Gibbs sat on my left. Billy Russell & his Italian wife were there, Mr & Miss Gibbs, young Mr & Mrs Birch, Ld & Lady Esher, Miss Gurwood, Lady Courtown & daughter, Mr Austin Lee, Mr & Mrs Grenfell. Our host made a little speech of despedida to the Spanish Minister to wh he duly responded in English– It had begun to snow again as we returned home soon after 11.
