7 April 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 7th April [1886]. Kate went to sit for her portrait. I took a hansom & went to see Lady Eastlake & returned her some sketches of Sir Charles’ of pictures wh she had lent me to copy. I drove to the Kitchen from there & after helping over the dinners went home. Kate lunched with Cornelia. I found Lady Bagot come to luncheon when I got home. She drove with me as far as Piccadilly. I picked up Kate at Hamilton House & we drove together. Blanche came & dined with Kate. Henry & I dined with Sir John & Lady De Gex. I sat next our hostess’ father Sir John Briggs, a hale old man with curly white hair who said he had been 40 years in the Admiralty & had known Sir Thomas Hardy, Nelson’s friend. He said Hardy was before his time as to his ideas & looked to steam to change the navy & said all the old people who wished to keep things back were foolish & it must come. Music in the evening. Mrs Beddington played the piano very well also Mr DuPrés sang– Tho old his voice is very fine still & his method excellent. A Mrs Arthur Levi sang with great execution but with a hard voice without any music in it. A Mr Lester Cooper played the violincello very well—& Count Loredan also played. A good many people came in the eveng.
