8 April 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 8th April [1886]. I walked out in the morng & called on Lady Ampthill but did not see her– I went to the Dinners & home to lunch. I drove with Kate. We went to see Felicia & Elizabeth Bertie & found Mary going on well. We drove down Parliament St to try & see what was going on. There was a great crowd waiting to see Gladstone drive down to the House to announce what he intends doing for Ireland. We went to call on Alice & found Blanche there just going on to hear the debate. Cecil Alderson arrived to stay with us today & brought their little boy Reggie with him. Cecil went off to the House to hear the Debate. We took Reggie to drive with us. Henry & I went to dine with the John Murrays & met Mrs Proctor, Miss Hubbard, the Jack Murrays & M. Waddington the French Ambr. We waited ½ hour for him as he had been to the House to hear Gladstone speak. He seemed to think the speech was a feeble one—& that the proposal to give Home Rule to Ireland was the first great step down ward of England—& so was all our own people to think. Henry is very low abt things.
