10 April 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 10th [April 1886]. Shopped in the morning. At 1 Henry & I drove to the Rolls Court to lunch with the Master thereof & found there Lady Esher, her daughter Mrs D. Ward, Mr & Mrs Brett, the American Minister, the Russian Ambr de Stael & Madame, Turkish Ambassador Ld & Ly Herschel, Lord Iddesleigh came in late, Mr Maxwell Light &c. A short but good lunch was served & then we were taken to a centre room where were laid out some of the curiosities—Doomsday Book, Treaties, bonds, maps—signatures & a bewildering quantity of curious & fine things at wh one had only time to glance. At 3.30 we came home. Mme d’Antas & Lady Airlie came to see me. Kate, Cecil & little Reggie left us & returned to Holdenby by 4.30 train. Henry & I dined with Mr & Mrs Evelyn of Wotton in Grafton St. Met Lord & Lady Middleton & Mr & Mrs Childers &c. Childers took me to dinner & I sat by Ld Middleton who is nearly blind.
