10 May 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 10th May [1886]. Accounts &c. I went out walking 1st to Thompson—whom I saw—& looked over the accounts of the dinners for the people. We had given away 6149 dinners for £172. I went on to Mrs White but I did not find her at home. I went shopping & returned home at 1. Henry lunched alone & went out. I went over to see Mama & met Mrs Willy Hanson coming to me so she walked round with me—& then came home & lunched with me & I took her as far as the Grosvenor Gallery & then drove on to do some shopping & to fetch Henry from the Nat. Gallery where there had been a meeting of Directors. I saw Sir Wm Gregory, Sir F. Burton & Mr Wylde at the door & we took Sir Wm as far as the Atheneum Club. There we saw Sir Arthur Otway. Every one is in a state [of] excitement at what is taking place at the House today. Gladstone made his speech on 2nd reading of the Home Rule Bill & Hartington announced him. Sir A. Otway told us he had heard from Lord Morley that Chamberlain would still vote against it– The great excitement of the day is which way C will vote. We drove to Lady Gregory’s & had tea & then she showed us all the stuffs & things they had brought back from India. Sir Wm came in before we left & gave me a lovely rug. We went home from there as it began to rain. We had a rest in my bedroom till time to dress for dinner. Maria came in for a little while. We went to dine with the Rates. Met Mr & Lady Horatio Erskine, Lord & Lady Wynford, Lord & Ly Lovelace, the Bss of Lichfield, Mr Lindsay Antrobus, Mr & Mrs Tom Bruce. Mr Erskine took me to dinner & I sat next Mr Bruce.
