Thursday. 13th May [1886]. I went out walking with Nela Du Cane & Eda Alderson shopping. They returned home at 12.30. I went to call on Mrs Holmes White & then walked on to Maria’s & saw them off on their way to Weymouth in a procession of 3 cabs to the Station. I got home to lunch. Fred Layard & Miss Maxwell lunched with us & I sat talking with the latter until 4. Henry went out in the carriage at 3 to call on old Mrs Austen his aunt & sent the carriage back for me & I called for him at Lady Eastlake’s & we drove together leaving cards &c. We took Mr Sharp Luff’s portrait of Thomas Cromwell to see if he would like to buy it for the National Portrait Gallery & left it with him. Home to tea. Edgar came in abt 6 & I took him to call on Blanche & then home to dress & went to dine at Sir Arthur Otway’s. We met Lord & Lady & Miss Hammond, Mr Lawrence Oliphant who is home from his Caipha settlement for a little while. Met Lord Augustus Loftus—a heavy stupid old man—Sir Wm & Lady Gregory, Genl Greville, Mr Russell Lowell– Phoebe Otway sang in the eveng songs of her own composition. | |
