16 May 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 16th May [1886]. Had a row with my maid abt her having demanded a present of my dressmaker wh I saw yesterday arrive. I went to see Blanche before church & then to church & heard Mr Haweis preach his 2nd sermon of scenes fm the Life of St Paul—& he gave an eloquent description of the trial of Stephen– It was a horrid wet day & I came straight home. Henry’s nephew Arthur Layard came to see us & stayed to lunch. Edgar also came & brought Canon Tristram who is thought to be so like Henry he had 3 times been taken for him today. He & Edgar remained on talking after Henry went out in the carriage & we all told different stories of Gladstone & abused him to our heart’s content. When they were gone I went out on foot & called on Bertha Fletcher née Talbot—whom I have not seen since I married. She was not well eno’ to see me. I went on to 3 Cavendish Square & saw Miss Talbot—then took a hansom & drove to see Mrs Drummond & Mrs Kay who were at home & had an M.P. Mr Stewart Kendall a Welsh M.P. calling who was very pleasant. All the way fm Cav. Sqr to the Marble Arch there reached a Temperance procession with 3 bands & endless banners & they turned into the Park. Unluckily it drizzled all the afternoon. I returned to No 15 & found Henry calling on Blanche & walked home with him. I went on to see Annie who was much better. Hatzfeldt & his daughter Baby (Mary) & Bee Eliot dined with us & we had a quiet talk.
