17 May 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 17th May [1886]. I got a letter from Monty by the morng post offering to let us his fishing in Norway for £100—& Henry at once said that it was too late & told me to telegraph to him to say so in which I agreed with him. I wrote the telegram & my letters. Henry went out in the morning to try on a coat & on coming in he told me he had been thinking over it & he thought we had better go to Norway after all & not go to Venice where the cholera is officially announced—tho’ only 5 or 6 cases a day. We therefore decided on this course. My telegram had not gone & we wrote another accepting. Being displeased with Gigia I gave her warning to quit & said I was going to Norway in June & would send her back to Venice then. She was much taken aback—begged me to keep her at least till the winter and asked pardon– I said I would keep her on– I went to see Blanche & told her of our new plan & she was as pleased as I am– Mrs Rate & Connie Eliot came to lunch with us– We offered to let the Rate boy share the fishing if they liked– Henry went to Nat. Gallery after lunch. I drove Connie & left her at Hamilton Hse & then went to the Club to find Henry– As he was not there I went to Nat. Gall. where I found him & Sir Wm Gregory, took them both to the Club, left them there & fetched Henry again later & took him home– We dined with Sir Wm & Miss Drake & met Mrs & Miss Buxton, Mr & Miss Grenfell, Mrs Robert Bruce &c &c. Mr Alexander took me to dinner & I sat next Sir Wm Drake. He showed us the lace train (Alençon) over white satin which he had just bought & had belonged to the Empress Josephine.
