20 May 1886 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 20th May [1886]. We drove to Bushey Park to see the chestnut trees. We started at 10.30 & went to the German Embassy to call for Hatzfeldt & his daughter Baby. They were not ready so we went in & waited for them. The weather was not bright but it was not raining when we made our final start abt 10 past 11. As we got to Bushey it rained slightly & we were glad to get into Hampton Ct Palace under shelter. We went over the Palace & looked at the pictures. While there one of the attendants recognised Henry as having been 1st Commissioner & said he was a Welsh man & had known my father & was very pleased to see me– We drove on after seeing the Palace to Hurstside, Sir Henry Thompson’s place abt 1½ mile along the river. He & Mrs Watkins had driven down to receive us & they gave us an excellent luncheon. It cleared up—the sun shone & we were able to walk in the garden & go through the strawberry, grape & other hot houses of wh there are many. Sir Henry goes in certainly for fruit & vegetables. We picked a few flowers to carry back to London—the lilac trees, Columbine & wisterias were everywhere in full flower. We had a fine drive home starting at 4. We dropped the Hatzfeldts at Hyde Pk Corner & went home. We dined with Lord & Lady Wemyss & met the Gregorys, Lady Airlie, Mr Oliphant—& had a pleasant evening.
