24 May 1886 — Brussels
Monday. 24th May [1886]. We walked to the picture gallery. The morning was hot but showery. We got back to lunch. Maffei called directly after. At 3 I went to call on Mrs Napier at the Hotel de France. She is still on the sofa after a “mishap” & prettily dressed in a tea gown, looked very handsome. Henry joined me there after going to write our names on the Ct & Css de Flandres. The Master was also at home & we stayed a long time chatting & had tea & then Henry went with the Master to the studio of a Ct Delaing & I returned to the hotel to wait for Lady Vivian to fetch me for a drive. She came at 5 & drove me to the Bois which is a lovely place & I enjoyed it & her society. We went to dine at 7.30 with Marquis Maffei & met Mr & Mrs Gosselin, the Master of Napier, Capt & Mme de Burnell (ADC to the Ct de Flandres), Mr Fish ex U.S. Minister, Mme de Benghem, Mme de Renesse, Ct Cantagalli (the Italian Conseillier). We had an excellent dinner in a house full of lovely old things collected by Ct Maffei since we were with him at Madrid. After dinner we went to the upper drawing room & then later returned below where we found the dinner table had vanished & we were able to examine the pretty things every where hanging, silver plates, silks, tapestries, faiences &c &c.
