18 June 1886 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Friday. 18th [June 1886]. Edgar & I had a good morning’s work putting up pegs in the hall. Dined at 4.30. At 6.30 Edgar & I went out fishing with the Marquis. We began fishing for trout but finally went after “sma sei” or cod fish. We soon found ourselves in a shoal of them going after a shoal of young herrings. It was a curious scene—the gulls & terns came round us screaming & dipping for the herrings—the Scythe jumped out after the little fish almost disputing them with the birds– We caught them with a rod & line– I lost 3 minnows my gut being too fine & at last I took to fishing with a fly & got two good ones. We had at last to come home to supper & left the fishing jumping & frisking like young kittens– We got home to supper with 17 scythe having lost a good many.
