23 June 1886 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Wednesday. 23rd June [1886]. It was a fine morning and after I had written for the post Henry, Fred & I walked down to Noste to see the steamer come in & get the post. We had a lovely walk across the fields and got to the village just as the steamer came in but to our disappointment not a single letter came—only 2 papers for Fred. Edgar was very much disappointed as he had hoped for accounts of his wife’s death. Read till dinner time at 4.30. It set in wet in the evening so that we had to get up in waterproofs to go out. Henry went to Friswold, Fred to Beoring, I to the bridge. I took “the Marquis” with me to help in case of need & to my surprise I had a rise—4 times a salmon jumped at my fly (eagle). The 4th he took it & I hooked him. Luckily old Anton saw me & ran to my assistance & told me what to do as it was my first salmon. He told me to walk down to the river side—sent the Marquis for the boat just above & himself rowed me down the river. The fish sulked at the bottom for some time but when we got him into the boat darted down– We landed on a shallow place & after playing him Anton gaffed him safely. My arms ached & I suppose I had him on ½ hour. He weighed 15 lbs. I went up again to cast from the bridge but to no effect & about 9 as it was very cold & rain set in harder than ever I came home & began to learn to play piquet of Edgar, abt 10 Henry came in with a 15 lb. salmon & Fred with 3 trout—we had supper & went to bed.
