12 January 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 12th [January 1887]. I sent out the invitations. Edith came & we had our guitar lesson & then she & I went out together & took a turn in the Piazza & went to see Mme de Hurtado. We dined at 7 with the Canevaros & there was whist. Several people came there amongst them D. & Dss Cafero Neapolitans. She is very ugly but pleasant—a bride– He is in the navy, a dark taciturn man. His first wife & daughter were killed in the earthquake at Casamicciola. They were separated but he had the shock of learning her death by the papers! Her brother Col. Afan de Rivera a colossally stout man sang—very much out of tune & making the most absurd & affected faces shutting his eyes & throwing his head on one side.
