19 January 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 19th January [1887]. I woke with a headache. In order to fortify myself against the evening I remained in bed till lunch & read a French novel & had my 2 birds Joey & Jacky flying about me. After lunch I went downstairs to have a general look round. At 4 Idita came to put up the flowers wh arrived from Florence & we had tea. Dined at 7 & had a dose till it was time to dress & at 9.30 we went downstairs to have the rooms lighted up & at 10 a few began to arrive & abt ½ past the dancing began. Tea was served in the little room next the card room & the dancing was kept up with great spirit. There was a Highland Schottische danced before supper which was opened in the dining room at 12.30. The Prefect took me to supper. Henry took Css Marcello. Afterwards there was a Sir Roger de Coverly wh I danced with Ct Serego & Henry with Css Marcello. The cotillion began at 2.30 & lasted with great spirit until past 5. In the middle of it they stopped & went to supper & at the end they supped again [&] they all went away happy & jolly & we got to bed abt 5.30.
