23 January 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 23rd [January 1887]. When Henry was dressed he passed thro’ my room & as usual opened Jacky the bullfinch’s cage. I was not quite awake when I was startled by a bang & jumping up I found the poor little bird had banged against the window & was lying on the floor. On picking him up I found to my surprise he was not dead & I had a faint hope he might live. I warmed him in my hands & he revived & I put him in a nest in his cage. He even took a seed out of my hand but was too ill to eat it & suddenly he had a fit & was dead abt ½ hour after the accident. I was very sorry; the poor little thing was so tame & knew me so well—whistled Jenny Jones to me when I bid him & called out Jack Jackie when he heard my voice. I went to the service at the Grand Hotel & afterwards took Carry home & talked over their arrangements for their ball on Tuesday & then went home to lunch. Mr Peabody Russell lunched with us. Henry went out. I remained at home & had a regular reception all the world having taken into their heads that it was my day. Mrs & Miss Bronson dined with us upstairs in the library. Edith & I made cigarettes. Cortelazzo came to Venice. At night abt 12.30 I was woke by an earthquake.
