27 January 1887 — Milan | |
Thursday. 27th [January 1887]. Henry went out after breakfast with Morelli & I sat by the fire trying to keep warm. Lunched by myself & afterwards Da Mariquita & Css Brandolin came & arranged to send back the carriage to fetch me while they paid a visit wh they did & they took me to Mlle Canzi’s to choose some work & silks. We found her with red eyes saying her mother was ill & the Dr feared typhus fever would set in. We arranged for some work & then I returned with Da M. & sat with her. Had tea & saw all her visitors amongst whom was the Marquise Trotti her daily visitor. Abt 5 I returned to the hotel & found Henry returned. Morelli dined with us. When I came in I found Mrs Brown & her son just arrived from Venice & going on to the Riviera tomorrow. They said Mr P. Russell had come by the same train & was gone to another hotel– After dinner Henry, Morelli & I went to the d’Addas where there were a great many people it being their son’s fête day. His wife & her sister both complained of having la migraine but said they had taken a few drops of laudanum to enable them to keep up—a horrible remedy as I told them. | |
