29 January 1887 — Milan
Saturday. 29th January [1887]. We were called at 6 & started by 8 train for Bale. It was very cold but fine & the pass of St Gothard was very fine with sparkling snow & icicles. At the table d’hôte at Goschenen I found my next neighbour was Mr P. Russell who left Milan this morning & was going on to London. He joined us in our carriage part of the journey. We reached Bale abt 7 & walked across to the Hotel Euler. Had high tea—played patience & went early to bed.
