1 February 1887 — Paris | |
Tuesday. 1st February [1887]. I walked out with Henry in the morning shopping & we returned to lunch at 1. Mr Dreyfus called directly after breakfast & proposed to arrange to take Henry tomorrow to the Louvre to see M. & Mme Dieulafoy discoveries at Susa. I did not go out again in the afternoon as I had a headache. Mr Atlee called & was still with me when Henry returned from his afternoon walk. The Spanish Ambassador our old friend Señor Albareda came to see me. We had not met since I left Spain. He was very silent & preoccupied at the reports of war between Germany & France. Ct de Mas Latrie called also & when Henry accompanied him out to the door He burst into tears at the certain destruction to France which war would bring. There was a panic on the bourse. Henry declares he does not believe in war & that the reports are set abt by Bismark in order to influence the German elections & to enable him to get the money for soldiers which the last Parliament refused him. Dacre dined with us. | |
