2 February 1887 — Paris
Wednesday. 2nd February [1887]. Henry & I took a walk together in the morning & lunched early; at 1.30 M. Dreyfus fetched Henry. They saw some of the discoveries & also went to the Dieulafoy’s house. It appears that Madame D. dresses as a man, coat & trousers with short hair. She had been obliged to assume this dress on her travels as she always accompanied her husband & she continues it here in preference to that of her own sex. Dacre came to fetch me & took me to see his apartment in the Rue des Ecuries d’Artois 29 a very nice little place but as yet quite unfurnished. We went on to 18 Avenue Messine to call on Mme Hoskier whose “day” it was. She was very polite & pleasant & gave us tea. I went on to the door of Hoskier’s Bank where I left Dacre & I walked back to our hotel, shopping as I went. Baron Schickler came to call. He is one of the leading Protestants of France & has given a house & fine library to the Huguenot society here. He speaks English perfectly & seems a highbred gentleman. Dacre dined with us. Panic at Bourse worse than ever.
