5 March 1887 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 5th March [1887]. I went to consult Susan Hambro about my train for Court & then to Blanche & walked with her, coming home to lunch– Found Arthur here. He had this morning seen Ivor who confirmed Cornelia’s decision & they had a stormy interview. Maria came also & stayed a long time talking it over. Arthur said he had told Mildred he wished her to go to the Drawing Room with me but could not force it & anyhow would still continue his affection even if she disobeyed him. Mama came in before Maria left to talk it over & I returned with her to Langham House to talk it over with Kate as it was becoming evident that we must choose between Arthur & Adeline wh we would stick to in case Cornelia insists on receiving her. I returned by 4. Had a visit from Lady Belcher & from Mr Mathew Arnold & Mrs Buxton. Later Maria & Ruth came. We dined with Mr & Mrs Thomson Hankey to meet Sir Edward & Lady Thornton & their 2 daughters, also Mr George Eliot & Mr Agnew. A small pleasant party. Lady Thornton recounted to me all they gone thro’ from Lord Salisbury’s behaviour to Sir Edward on turning him out of the Embassy at Consple. Home early & played patience. Henry’s 70th birthday.
