7 March 1887 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 7th March [1887]. After giving out the week’s stores I returned to my room & had my hair washed. B. sent me over her lace pillow & I began her a new pattern of lace. Ola kindly came & did my hair. B. came to lunch & I showed her the lace. Maria came in the morning & I told her that as Cornelia was retracting we had all better keep quiet. At 3 I started in the carriage to see if Mama wd drive with me. I found her very agitated with her bonnet on wishing to go at once to Blanche as Blanche’s carriage was there waiting for Mildred for them to drive together. Mama had just recd a letter from Bircham to say Adeline insisted on Mildred’s immediate return to her & that she intended to call for her at 5—& in Mildred’s interest he advised Mama to let her go even if she had no answer or authority from Arthur. Blanche on hearing it advised (as I did) that the child should be allowed to go. Mildred arrived in B’s carriage as we were starting back—so we called her into the carriage & Mama told her she would have to leave & would be fetched away at 5. On Mildred’s asking why Mama said she did not know but she thought she must do so– The child’s face fell & she got out & went in to Blanche’s. I drove Mama on to Arthur’s at 40 Half Moon St but he was not there so I took Mama home & then went to do various commissions & later I went to Mama & found Mildred had gone. Arthur was there & seemed terribly low about it all. We dined at home.
