1 June 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 1st June [1887]. A real hot day at last. I painted my study in the morning till 12, then copied Bellini till lunch. Wrote till 4. Went to call on the Princess of Montenegro. She was at home. Met there Mrs Curtis & Mr Henry James the novelist (American). I stayed talking to the Princess who was very amusing till I had to go off to the Stabto to fetch Henry & the girls who had been walking, we came home by 5 & Mme Brandolin, M. & Mme D’Adda, Mlle Falco & Countess Canevaro came to tea. Afterwards I went with Ersilia to the lawn tennis at the Dss della Grazias. Ola & Nela followed in our gondola. There were a good many people there. The girls played tennis & we stayed till past ½ 7. Just before we left the Comte de Bardi arrived. The Dss della Grazia got up curtsied to him as did all the others. Css Hohenlohe called him “Monsigneur” & all treated him like royalty. The Dss gave us lovely roses out of their other garden. Henry took the girls out for a row by moonlight. I remained in & wrote.
