4 June 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 4th June [1887]. Up as usual at 7. Read before breakfast. Painted study & copy of Bellini all morning & again after lunch. Tea at 4.30. Went out at 5. Left cards on Bss Oesterreicher & went to the Edens’ garden. Met there Pss Metternich, Mrs Bronson, the Cozzi brothers & Ct Garbardi– C gave me flowers. We went on to the Brazzoduro garden & bought pots of flowers & came home at 7.15. Ola & I busied ourselves with putting out & arranging the flowers till dinner. Henry went to station to meet Sir Francis & Mr Alston who are come to stay with us & so we dined at 8.15. At dinner a note was brought to me from Bss Oesterreicher saying “I think it right to to let you know that I am surprised at your answering my invitation by a card at the hour I told you I am at home” as she had told me the other day she was always at home at 5! Old Luigi the gondolier was not well & asked for leave to go home, so we remained in & I played the organ.
