15 June 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 15th [June 1887]. I got a telegram the last thing last night from Blanche asking us to lend our house in London to Luff and his family for the Jubilee week & answered this morng in the affirmative. Trimmed Ola a hat & all sat in the studio sewing. After lunch had a visit from Mrs Brown—later from Miss Clifford & Idita Hurtado & Miss Ribesdale & Olga Pss of Montenegro who had tea with us. At 6 I took the girls to the Dss Della Grazie’s & there saw Lord Ashburnham who was as is his wont dancing attendance upon the Bardis. He has a mania for different pretender Princes, even going so far as to say our Queen is not our legitimate Sovereign. We knew him in Spain when he came to pay a visit to his brother John, Henry’s secretary. There he fell ill & kept his bed 3 months. At the end of the time he got up knowing Spanish perfectly & having become a Roman Catholic. I was introduced to the Countess de Bardi a pretty little Portuguese Princess & she talked to me about modelling which I am told she does very well. We came home just in time for 8 o’cl dinner. Went out directly after dinner in gondola– While listening to the music out side the giardinetto we met the Bronsons gondola & with them Mr Hy James the author. Also the Edens & all floated alongside each other. There was lightening & distant thunder.
