18 June 1887 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 18th [June 1887]. Henry & I had tea as usual at 7. I was writing before 8 when Regina came in & announced to me that she was expecting a baby– As she was conveying this startling news in came Gigia to say that Annie the cook had cut her finger badly. I went up & found she had cut off the top of the nail. We stopped the bleeding with ice & tied it up until we could get a Dr who dressed it for her– This all made me late for breakfast. Ola made me a summer bonnet & I read Wordsworth’s excursion aloud—Nela also sitting at work. Lunch at 1.30. Practised harmonium. At 3 Ola & I went to call on Ersilia Canevaro & she sang to us. Henry & Nela fetched us & we went & left cards & took a row. It blew pretty hard & was delightfully cool. I read aloud to Ola before dinner. Nela dined with the Canevaros– Ola, Henry & I went out in gondola, stayed under the giardinetto to hear the music & under Bowers to hear the Hungarian band. Nela joined us at 10 under the giardinetto & we came home early to bed.
